The four purposes of the curriculum, as set out in Successful Futures, have guided the whole design and development of Curriculum for Wales 2022. They are the starting point for all decisions in respect of Curriculum for Wales 2022 and school-level curricula should be designed and guided by these same four purposes. ‘Curriculum’ includes all the learning experiences and assessment activities planned in pursuit of the Four Purposes of the curriculum, which are to develop children and young people as:
- ambitious, capable learners, ready to learn throughout their lives
- enterprising, creative contributors, ready to play a full part in life and work
- ethical, informed citizens of Wales and the world
- healthy, confident individuals, ready to lead fulfilling lives as valued members of society.
Curriculum for Wales 2022 is designed to help all learners realise these Four Purposes. Each purpose is more than a headline; it is also described in terms of key characteristics. In their entirety they should underpin all teaching and learning within Curriculum for Wales.
We promote the Four Purposes to our pupils through the following characters:
These characters are displayed around the school and are referred to regularly during lessons and playtimes.
The Four Purposes are also central to our school recognition system, exhibited by the fact that our ‘tocynnau clod’ or ‘praise tokens’ and certificates are based on the ‘Pedwar Pwerus’ or ‘Fantastic Four’ characters. When pupils have had an outstanding week of achievement, this will be recognised and praised in our weekly assemblies. Pupils will occasionally come home with a ‘tocynnau clod’ certificate for having earned the most praise points in their class during that week, or a ‘Pedwar Pwerus’ certificate for having exhibited the qualities of one or more of the Four Purposes during the week.
